About Me

The Scribe is my online name (which I don’t seem to use much any more) and Karen Lee Field is my pen name. I mainly write fantasy stories for 9 to 12-year-olds, young adults and adults. I’ve dabbled in other genres as well as non-fiction, but nothing worthy of publication has come out of that dabbling to date. Occasionally, I will write a short story, but this type of writing isn’t a priority for me. As weird as it might sound, I find short stories harder to write than novel-length manuscripts. You can follow my progress by going to the Works in Progress page (I’ll try to keep in as up-to-date as possible).

In July 2008 I was involved in publishing an anthology – Speculative Realms: Where there’s a will, there’s a way. My story “Where Strength Lies” is included and I hope you’ll support my writing by purchasing a copy of the book/ebook. Find out more…

On 1 September 2010, I set up Kayelle Press, a small publishing company. I intend to share my experiences on this blog regarding setting up a small press — the woes and the satisfaction achieved. I’ve decided not to rush things because that’s when stress sets in. I’ll move steadily along the indie publishing path until I’m where I want to be. That’s my plan for the future and I hope you’ll come back regularly to witness the journey. (The publishing company was closed on 31 December 2015 due to having to become a primary carer for my mother, who has Alzheimer’s.)

There is more to life than writing I’m told, so there have to be other things that I’m interested in. Hmmm! The best I can do is to tell you that I love researching Medieval times and Ancient Egypt. When I’m away from the computer I enjoy reading. My all-time favourite book is Illusion by Paula Volsky, followed closely by Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. Although I do read a lot of fantasy, I also enjoy a good murder mystery; a touch of horror/thriller now and again; and even a sloppy romance when the mood takes me. I’ve also become addicted to scrapbooking (not so much these days) and knitting. Both are great ways to relax.

Born in London, England, I moved with my parents to Sydney, Australia in 1969. I lived on the south coast of NSW for many years before relocating to the beautiful Blue Mountains. I love the mountains and I love the sea. In 2017 I returned to the south coast of NSW. I live with my husband and a sharp-toothed puppy (we still call him a puppy when technically he no longer is).
